Have you ever wished you could take a peek at what it’s like to have a different career? Have you ever wondered how other people found their jobs? How much they earn? What they plan to do with their lives? Here’s a great way to satisfy that curiosity.
The Khan Academy careers and personal finance channel features an ongoing series of interviews with people from different walks of life. There are interviews with an author, for example, and an assistant hotel manager. There are interviews with a chef and a city planner. There are interviews with a nurse and an airline pilot.
Each interview is divided into several parts, each of which covers a different subject. The first part of each interview explores “what I do and how much I make”. The second part covers “how I got my job and where I’m going”. The third part is about budgeting and planning for the future. And the fourth part (when there is a fourth part) offers miscellaneous practical advice.
Here, for instance, is the Khan Academy interview with a welder named Neil:
These videos are fascinating, and they’d be a great resource to share with kids who are thinking about different careers. Sure, most young adults will probably find them tedious, but for a student who is genuinely curious about figuring out what to do with her life, these could be a gold mine!
Right now, the channel has profiles of maybe two dozen different careers, but a new interview is posted every week. (On a related note, the Khan Academy also has a series of excellent interviews with entrepreneurs.)
